This two-day course consists of short presentations interspersed with laboratories in which participants learn a wide variety of neurosurgical approaches and techniques.

Specific procedures include rostral and caudal fossa craniotomies, ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement, spinal stabilization, and lumbosacral decompression. Attendees will be provided the opportunity to practice neurosurgical techniques other than thoracolumbar hemilaminectomy and ventral slot procedures under the guidance of expert neurosurgeons while sharing experiences with other participants.

Completion of this course fulfills one of the requirements for the ACVIM Certificate of Neurosurgery Training.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  1. Obtain working knowledge of the various approaches to the brain and spine, including an understanding of regional anatomy and specific tips and techniques.
  2. Become familiar with the indications and potential complications of specific neurosurgical procedures.
  3. Gain experience using neurosurgical instruments, including drills, plates, pins, screws and ventriculoperitoneal shunts.
