Comprehensive Oncology Service:

The successful candidate will work with three additional boarded radiation oncology faculty members to enhance referral caseload at two veterinary radiation therapy facilities.  Clinical duties will primarily be focused on the Veterinary Health Center (VHC) at our teaching hospital in Columbia, MO. In addition, the faculty member will contribute to planning and case management of cases seen at our satellite facility in Wentzville, MO.  Teaching duties will include veterinary students and training of residents and interns.  The Comparative Oncology, Radiobiology, and Epigenetics Laboratory (COREL) offers the opportunity for participating as a collaborator in basic, translational, and clinical research.

The University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine has a rich history of radiation oncology and radiopharmaceutical therapy. We utilize an Elekta Infinity HD linear accelerator capable of stereotactic radiation therapy, 4D cone beam CT, volumetric modulated arc therapy, and image guided radiation therapy.  The linear accelerator is supported by the Mosaiq record-and-verify system, and Monaco treatment planning system.  The University of Missouri also boasts unparalleled access to a radiopharmaceutical pipeline, and an advanced radiation isolation ward, which facilitates the use of yttrium-90, radioiodine, samarium-153, and various Positron Emission Tomography (PET) agents, while maximizing patient and personnel safety.

MU Radiation Oncology functions as part of a comprehensive oncology service that consists of 4 ACVIM medical oncologists, 3 ACVR radiation oncologists, and 2 ACVS, fellowship-trained surgical oncologists.  The service also has six medical oncology residents and three radiation oncology residents in training.

In addition, The University of Missouri has a satellite veterinary clinic located in Wentzville, MO which services the greater St. Louis area.  The veterinary services at this location include medical oncology, radiation oncology, dermatology, and clinical trials.  The hospital features a Varian 21EX linear accelerator with 128 leaf MLC, portal-vision, and Mosaiq record and verify system, a radiography suite, a chemotherapy hood, and a Canon Aquilion 32-slice CT scanner.

The faculty member would have access to the COREL laboratory.  This laboratory is equipped for a variety of basic science research in the fields of oncology, radiation biology, and epigenetics.  This laboratory has equipment to support culture of human and canine cell lines, polymerase chain reaction, gel electrophoresis, and preparation of sequencing libraries.  The laboratory also houses an automated live cell imaging suite including fluorescent and phase contrast microscopy.

The University of Missouri boasts the world’s largest University-based research nuclear reactor in the MURR.  The reactor and the associated cyclotron provide the University of Missouri with a unique arsenal of radiopharmaceuticals for use in translational and clinical research.  The College of Veterinary Medicine has a long history of collaboration with MURR.

The University of Missouri System and the University of Missouri – Columbia have made strong commitments to a Precision Health Initiative, which is designed to capitalize on the unique set of assets available at the University of Missouri.  The College of Veterinary Medicine and the Comparative Oncology Program have been included as a key member of this initiative.

Our Campus and Our Community

MU’s Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital is a state-of-the-art teaching and medical services facility for companion animals as well as livestock. Columbia, MO is an ideal location for such a teaching hospital.

The population of central Missouri and reasonable proximity to St. Louis and Kansas City provide for a robust small animal emergency and referral caseload. Missouri is a strong agricultural state with large numbers of horses, cattle, hogs, and poultry.

MU is a nationally competitive, global university. Many states fund separate research and land-grant universities, but Missouri combines those roles at its flagship institution. MU is both a land-grant university with a statewide mission of service to citizens and Missouri’s largest public research university. Mizzou is one of only five universities nationwide that offers law, medicine, veterinary medicine and a nuclear research reactor on one campus.

MU is a national leader in comparative medicine, in which researchers collaborate by sharing discoveries, innovations and treatments for humans and animals.  For more about the College of Veterinary Medicine and our impact on Missouri, the nation and the world, go to:
