Puget Sound Veterinary Specialists in the beautiful Pacific Northwest (Gig Harbor, Washington) is seeking a Criticalist to join our family!

About Us

Puget Sound Veterinary Specialists is a new specialty hospital in the heart of the Pacific Northwest.  We are a progressive and inclusive practice, started with the vision of breaking the mold of veterinary medicine that is rife with burnout and compassion fatigue.  Our core values of Respect, Integrity, Compassion, and Humility with the over-arching “Do The Right Thing” are the backbone and framework of how we practice medicine, care for ourselves, each other, our patients and their families.  We prioritize quality of life and work-life balance to give time to enjoy everything the beautiful PNW has to offer.

We take pride in our horizontal team structure. Our technical and support staff are highly valued and cherished as critical members of the team, this is evident in our shared bonus structure that is provided to all support staff as the hospital grows.  In addition to exemplary specialty and emergency medicine, we maintain a collaborative and collegial working environment that supports continued growth and learning in our hospital at all levels.

Career Opportunity

PSVS has a rare and exciting opportunity for you, a visionary DACVECC, to build the critical care specialty service of your dreams and contribute to the culture and development of the hospital.  You will have the support of the existing specialties at PSVS, including surgery, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, and dentistry.  A fully operational 24-hour ER service, currently located in a separate facility, will be transitioned into the new hospital to work with and under the purview of our new criticalist.

We are currently in the process of designing and building a state-of-the-art, 21,000 sf facility in Gig Harbor, Washington. The new facility will include a dedicated ICU including long-term mechanical ventilation, full in-house lab, 64-slice CT, MRI, ultrasound, in-house blood-bank and component therapy, I-131 therapy, minimally invasive surgery, flexible and rigid endoscopy, and more.

Our ideal candidate is board-certified in DACVECC with experience, would value and foster a hospital culture of compassionate care, would promote teamwork, and inclusivity with the vision to expand our core values and hospital vision.  They are adaptable with an excellent work ethic, be an out-of-the box thinker who has the vision and gumption to start a critical care service and integrate an amazing, well trained preexisting ER team.

The Successful Candidate:

Life is not just about work!  We recognize that to be an excellent, satisfied clinician with longevity in this career, work-life balance is imperative.  Work life balance is a founding principle of our hospital.  Quality of life involves loving our jobs as well as pursuing our passions outside of work.  Imagine living on the beautiful, laid-back Olympic Peninsula, an outdoor-enthusiast’s dream with mountains and the Puget Sound out your backdoor, and the Pacific Coast or desert a couple hours’ drive away.  The metropolitan life of downtown Seattle is just a short drive or ferry trip away. Here are some of the ways we will help ensure this balance…

  • Help continue to develop an incredible multispecialty and ECC hospital
  • Generous above average salary-only position without the stress of a production-based model
  • Potential milestone bonuses as the department grows and thrives
  • A generous relocation bonus
  • 401K with employer match
  • Full medical/dental/vision, employer-paid short and long-term disability insurance
  • License reimbursement and a liberal CE allowance
  • Substantial (greater than 3 weeks) paid time off for work/life balance with no worry for negative accrual
  • Personal pet discount
  • Flexible schedule
  • AVMA member & PLIT insurance
  • Access to veterinary social worker services
  • A chance to give back and help train a new generation of emergency doctors and technicians

If your dream work/personal life involves loving your job as well as pursuing your passions outside of work, come join us, develop your own critical care service, and see what working with a truly supportive, engaged team is like!  Please send your CV to our medical director, Heather Knapp-Hoch, DVM DACVS at hknapphoch@psvs.vet.  Inquiries will be treated with complete confidentiality.  Learn more about us at https://pugetsoundvetspecialists.com
