Clinical or Tenure-track Assistant/Associate/Full Professor - Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (ISU), located in Ames, Iowa, is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, clinical or tenure track faculty appointment in the area of Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) and the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC).  The LVMC is a state-of-the-art teaching hospital providing specialized care for companion and large animals throughout Iowa and surrounding states. The candidate will join a department with over 50 diverse faculty and staff members, allied in teaching, research, and clinical efforts relevant to companion animals, equids, and other large animals.

The successful candidate will provide clinical service and teaching in the LVMC and the primary focus for all aspects of the position will be on veterinary emergency and critical care for patients in the Hixson-Lied Small Animal Hospital. Clinical duties may include weekend and after-hours obligations. Supervision and instruction of interns and residents, instruction of clinical-year students, and primary case supervision is expected, in addition to participation and contribution to weekly resident boards review and journal clubs. The successful candidate should have a collegial, collaborative attitude and willingness to participate in all levels of technician, student, and house officer education. Remaining effort may include participation in research, scholarship, and traditional didactic and laboratory teaching. Appointment rank will be determined by the qualifications, documented experience, and interests of the selected candidate.

The successful candidate will join a program currently supported by two small animal ACVECC diplomates, four residents, three emergency doctors, eight rotating interns, three large animal ACVECC diplomates, as well as registered veterinary technicians; including two VTS-ECC.  The emergency and critical care (ECC) department is a young and dynamic service that is continuing to experience steady growth. Centered in the State of Iowa, just 25 minutes from the largest city in the state, Des Moines, the LVMC serves a large geographic region (Iowa and surrounding states), providing a diverse and challenging caseload that allows the ECC service to practice cutting edge medicine. Services and technology supporting the ECC service include but are not limited to digital radiography, point of care ultrasound, advanced imaging (1.5T MRI, 32-Slice CT), interventional radiology, mechanical ventilation (Servo-i), high velocity nasal insufflation (two Vapotherm units), therapeutic plasma exchange (Amicus device), multi-parameter monitoring systems, an in-house blood bank, TEG, and two pharmacists with compounding capability. Continuous renal replacement therapy (Prismaflex) will be available starting in 2022. The successful candidate will share oversight of the ICU and the Emergency Service with the other ECC faculty members. The 43 cage ICU is currently managed in an open style with all services providing primary care, utilizing a collaborative approach to maximize case management. The 24/7 Emergency Service sees approximately 7,000 cases/year, including first opinion cases as well as referrals. The LVMC is AAHA accredited, a VetCOT Level 2 trauma center and a Level II VECCS certified facility.
