Faculty Position in Internal Medicine

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for a full-time, tenure track or clinical track position in Internal Medicine. The position is at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, depending on qualifications and experience.

Requirements include a DVM/VMD degree or equivalent, completion of a formal residency in internal medicine, and certification or eligibility for certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine or European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.  The successful candidate will share an enthusiasm for teaching excellence, strong communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and compassionate patient care while actively supporting an inclusive teaching and work environment. Responsibilities include clinical, didactic and laboratory teaching of professional students and house officers; participation in continuing education at local, national and international levels; and for the tenure track position, the development of a basic science or clinical research program.  The successful candidate is expected to add to the department’s reputation and make contributions to the teaching, service, and research missions of the college. Exact effort allocation will depend on the chosen candidate’s interests and qualifications.

The Medicine Service practices out of a dedicated multipurpose treatment area with separate wards for dogs and cats. The service is supported by 6 internists, 3-5 residents, 3 veterinary nurses, and 1 veterinary assistant. Endoscopy and laparoscopy are performed using state-of-the art high-definition endoscopy towers. Laser therapy is provided with a Ho-YAG laser unit. Daily service activities are supported by the Small Animal Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) - a modern facility equipped with resources and expertise (18 specialty services) needed to provide first class patient care, research, and teaching. The VMC has a comprehensive ICU and Level-2 Emergency Service providing 24/7 emergency and critical care needs to hospitalized patients and the community. The service is well supported by an expert staff of boarded criticalists, residents, and nurses. Additional support includes state-of-the-art physical therapy including hyperbaric oxygen; DEXA analysis and home-cooked diet formulation by the nutrition service; and a Varian Linear Accelerator and low-dose radiotherapy facilities. Diagnostic imaging services include digital radiography, ultrasonography, nuclear medicine, 40 slice CT and 1.5T MRI scanners and the support of boarded radiologists. An Interventional Suite includes a Philips Veradius Neo-DS C-Arm with digital subtraction and a power injector.  Clinical services are supported by comprehensive endocrinology, virology, microbiology, parasitology, clinical pathology and anatomic pathology services.  A full-time Veterinary Social Work program offers counseling services for clients, faculty, staff, and students.  The state-of-the-art Teaching, Learning and Simulation Instruction Center will open in spring of 2022, along with a Center for Feline Health.  Faculty development is supported with the Master Teacher’s Program and the South Eastern Veterinary Educators Consortium. Dedicated clinical laboratory benchtop research spaces and licensed veterinary technicians for clinical trials are available for maximizing and facilitating translational research endeavors. Research collaborations within the College of Veterinary Medicine, Institute of Agriculture and main University of Tennessee campus are available and encouraged.
