Department: Veterinary Medicine | Veterinary Clinical Sciences

The Ohio State University Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences invites applications for a full-time, clinical-track faculty position in Cardiology. Applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree. Specialty board certification by ACVIM or ECVIM in cardiology or board eligibility is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have teaching and clinical experience in a university teaching hospital. An advanced degree or equivalent research experience is desirable. The successful candidate will join an internationally recognized clinical, teaching, and research program that includes two established faculty cardiologists, three cardiology residents, and two experienced technicians who support the cardiology clinic and the catheterization suite. The program is centered in a comprehensive teaching hospital and referral center with an annual caseload of approximately 35,000. Cardiology workspaces include a Cardiology Clinic Teaching space with adjacent Echo Lab; a state-of-the-art interventional medicine suite; and a Clinical Cardiology Research Laboratory.

Faculty members share clinical responsibilities. Although most of the clinical practice involves dogs and cats, the Cardiology service also evaluates heart and vascular diseases in horses, alpacas, and food animals in collaboration with colleagues in the Equine and Large-Animal hospitals. Extensive collaboration among faculty and residents in all clinical specialties results in a vibrant clinical arena that offers truly comprehensive care to veterinary patients with a stimulating practice environment.

Extensive resources are available to support both clinical and research activities in Cardiology. These include: two high-end digital echocardiographic systems (two Vivid E95 with 4D imaging and transesophageal echocardiography) and a Vivid-q system to support intra-procedural transesophageal echocardiography); four integrated GE Echocardiographic workstations (EchoPacs) with advanced digital applications; C-arm fluoroscopy (GE OEC9900) for cardiac catheterization and  interventional procedures; digital and analog hemodynamic monitoring equipment; equipment for cardiac pacing (including temporary pacing systems, a Lifepack 12 for transcutaneous pacing, and equipment for transvenous cardioversion in horses); full surface and Holter-Event ECG capabilities, and a fully digital hospital information system (ezyVet). . Additional relevant hospital resources include digital radiography; on-site ultrafast 128 slice spiral CT and 3T-MRI; nuclear medicine; and video bronchoscopy. There are pathology and clinical pathology services available on-site. The OSU Library System includes extensive digital resources as well as Veterinary College and Health Sciences Libraries.

Clinical and classroom teaching are a priority of the Cardiology Service with each team member actively involved in both professional and post-graduate education. Faculty teaching responsibilities include lectures, labs, and clinical teaching of cardiology to professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. Faculty members are expected to participate in professional outreach, committee service, and curriculum development.

This position involves up to 65% clinical responsibilities allowing sufficient off-clinic time for collaborative research, grant writing, publication, and continuing education. There is a mentoring program in place for new faculty members to support their academic development as teachers and investigators. There are extensive opportunities for faculty to develop collaborative research endeavors with clinicians and scientists within the College and across the University. Excellent collaborative opportunities are available in the Departments of Veterinary Biosciences and Veterinary Preventive Medicine within the College as well as other units across the University campus, including the comprehensive OSU Health Sciences Center, which is within walking distance of the College. The College of Medicine (http://medicine.osu.edu), the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute (http://heartlung.osu.edu); and the College of Pharmacy (www.pharmacy.ohio-state.edu) are a just a few of the resources available to clinicians interested in comparative cardiovascular research. Additionally, collaborative opportunities and relationships have been established at Columbus Nationwide Children’s Hospital (http://www.nationwidechildrens.org) and at Riverside Methodist Hospital (http://www.ohiohealth.com).

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences supports a faculty of over 75 clinical specialists, educators, and clinical scientists along with extensive training programs for professional students, interns, residents, and graduate students. The College of Veterinary Medicine (www.vet.osu.edu) is ranked 4th among North American colleges of veterinary medicine by US News and World Report.

Collegiality, civility, mutual support, and respect for others are strongly held values in the College of Veterinary Medicine. We support diverse beliefs and the free exchange of ideas and expect that faculty, staff, and students promote these values and apply them in a professional manner in all academic endeavors. In addition, The Ohio State University, in an effort to promote the health and well-being of all of its faculty, staff, students, and visitors, has chosen to maintain a tobacco-free environment. The appointee should have strong communication skills and an ability to work cooperatively with other faculty and staff. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and experience. The start date is negotiable; however, the position is currently available.

To apply, interested candidates are invited to submit a letter of intent stating professional goals and interests, a curriculum vita, and the names and contact information of four references. Inquiries regarding the position can be directed to Dr. Karsten Schober (Schober.4@osu.edu) or by telephone (614-292-3551) or Dr. Richard Bednarski, Chair, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, via e-mail (bednarski.1@osu.edu).
