Essential Job Duties: This position is designed to provide a board-certified or residency-trained Small Animal Internal Medicine clinician with the teaching skills necessary for a successful career in academia. Individuals in the final year of a residency program are encouraged to apply. The position will offer mentored guidance in instructional methodologies, course design, and educational research, in combination with clinical service in the North Carolina State University Veterinary Hospital. Advancement of clinical abilities will be through supervision of, and full participation in, 26 weeks per year of Small Animal Internal Medicine clinical service in the NC State Veterinary Hospital. Clinical responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to, direct oversight of cases received by interns and residents, direct involvement with client and referring veterinarian communications, teaching of veterinary students, house officers and visitors in rounds and on the clinic floor, consultations with services within the NC State Veterinary Hospital and with practicing veterinarians, and participation in clinical service meetings. Weekend and Holiday duties are shared with at least one other supervising clinician during each clinical rotation. The remaining time will be dedicated to developing expertise in clinical teaching.
Duties and Responsibilities: There will be a combination of activities, including enrollment in a teaching certificate administered by NCSU, or by the College of Veterinary Medicine, completion and publication of a research project related to clinical teaching, creation of a teaching portfolio, and the development and presentation of a one-week selective course in a clinical subject area. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in one-on-one clinical teaching, small group problem-based learning, and clinical laboratory instruction. The NCSU CVM has a strong infrastructure for the support of excellence in teaching, and leadership in innovative veterinary education is a top priority at the College. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with several faculty and support staff who are dedicated to curriculum development, student assessment and evaluation, learning strategies and implementation, communication education, and instructional technologies. It is expected that concrete evidence of scholarly activity in teaching will be obtained.
