The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure track), Associate Professor (with tenure) or Professor (with tenure) to teach in the undergraduate program with an emphasis in basic surgery and to perform clinical research. This position is also posted in the instructor stream.

Appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor will be made with the expectation of 30% of time devoted to research. Teaching will 50 -60% of the position pending rank and will include didactic, clinical and professional skills laboratories and 4th year rotation teaching in the DVM program as well as supervision of graduate students. Clinical skills teaching will have an emphasis on teaching basic undergraduate surgical skills. Clinical and teaching duties in addition to basic surgery instruction will be assigned based on needs of the program. Mentoring of clinical interns will also be part of the responsibilities. UCVM employs a distributed veterinary teaching hospital and clinical duties, and rotation teaching will occur in partner specialty practices and other practice settings.  Service will be 10-20% of assigned duties pending rank. 

Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent) and advanced clinical training in small animal surgery, with board certification or eligibility (American College of Veterinary Surgeons or European College of Veterinary Surgeons). Other specialties with a surgery component are encouraged to apply and will be equally considered. This includes but is not limited to specialists in    neurology, oral surgery, or ophthalmology. Individuals with advanced clinical training without board certification may also be considered. A graduate degree in clinical or educational research is considered an asset. Must be eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta. 

Applicants at the Assistant Professor rank must be able to demonstrate a strong publication record and evidence of successful undergraduate teaching.  Applicants at the Associate Professor rank must provide evidence of a strong publication record, and evidence of successful teaching and graduate supervision. Appointment at the Full Professor rank requires evidence of a well-established academic achievements recognized by peers at the national level, a significant track record of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals and evidence of an established and externally funded research program. The successful candidate will have evidence of an outstanding teaching and trainee (post doc, graduate and undergraduate) supervision and mentoring record.

UCVM has approximately 70 faculty members, 130 staff, 125 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 25 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. UCVM’s DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 30-32 students per year, with an expected expansion to 50 students. The program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas that combine discipline-based courses with extensive on-campus and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
