Small Animal Surgical Skills Assistant Professor (Teaching), Associate Professor (Teaching), Professor (Teaching), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) invites applications for a full or part time employment at the ranks of Assistant Professor (Teaching), tenure-track, Associate Professor (Teaching), with tenure, Professor (Teaching), with tenure ranks. 

This successful applicant will teach in the undergraduate program with an emphasis on basic small animal surgical skills. This position is also posted in the professorial stream for those interested in dedicated time for research. 

We are looking for additional faculty to join our team for our expanded class size. Teaching will be 80%-90% of this position pending rank and will include didactic, clinical and professional skills laboratories, and 4th year rotation teaching in the DVM program. Clinical and teaching duties in addition to basic surgery instruction will be assigned based on needs of the program. Mentoring of advanced clinical trainees and providing continuing education within the veterinary community will also be part of the responsibilities. UCVM employs a distributed veterinary teaching hospital and clinical duties, and rotation teaching will occur in partner specialty practices and other practice settings.   Service will be 10-20% of assigned duties pending rank. 

Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent) and advanced clinical training in small animal surgery, with board certification or eligibility (American College of Veterinary Surgeons or European College of Veterinary Surgeons). Other specialties with a surgical component to clinical activities are encouraged to apply and will be equally considered.  This includes but is not limited to specialists in ophthalmology, oral surgery, or neurology.  

A graduate degree in clinical or educational research is considered an asset. The candidate must be eligible for immediate licensure in the Province of Alberta. 

Appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) require evidence of successful undergraduate teaching abilities. The duties will normally include, but not go beyond the scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and content in the discipline.

Appointments at the rank of Associate Professor (Teaching) require evidence of successful undergraduate teaching effectiveness and innovation in teaching methods; evidence that the individual is capable of initiating and participating in a wide variety of teaching activities. The duties will normally include the scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and content in the discipline.

Appointments at the rank of Professor (Teaching) require evidence of excellence in effectiveness and innovation of teaching undergraduate students in a wide variety of teaching activities. The duties will normally include the scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and content in the discipline.

UCVM has approximately 80 faculty members, 130 staff, 125 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 25 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. UCVM’s DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 50 students per year. The program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas that combine discipline-based courses with extensive on-campus and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
