The University of Florida (UF) College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) announces a search for an Assistant Dean of Small Animal Hospitals (ADSAH).  The Assistant Dean position will be a 1.0 FTE with 75-80% administrative duties and 20-25% academic assignments (teaching, research, service). The ADSAH provides leadership, administers oversight of the medical care of patients, and guides the Small Animal Hospitals (SAH) in the strategic and operational aspects of clinical services.  The ADSAH oversees the functions performed by clinicians (faculty and house officers) in the provision of veterinary care in the UFVH (Small Animal Hospital – Gainesville, UF Pet Emergency and Treatment Services (UFPETS) – Ocala, and Small Animal Hospital at the World Equestrian Center (SAH WEC) – Ocala) consistent with the mission of the college and university. 

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for the Patient Quality and Safety Program Including supervision of the Patient Quality & Safety Officer In coordination with Service Chiefs, resolve conflicts related to patient care In coordination with the Client Service Manager, resolve client concerns related to patient/medical care

Responsible for oversight of the small animal hospital infection control program of the relevant area in conjunction with the respective infection control committee/officer In consultation with the Associate Dean of Clinical Services – SA (ADCS – SA), review the performance of Service Chiefs to ensure efficient operational management of the UFVH In consultation with the ADCS – SA and Service Chiefs, review the performance of the clinical faculty Oversight and management of Pet Samaritan Funds Oversight of the hospital's Electronic Medical Record system  Works with ADCS – SA and Service Chiefs to optimize: Clinic schedules and throughput On-call schedules Develop clinical policies and protocols and ensure compliance Concerns regarding faculty or house officer welfare in the clinic Concerns regarding faculty or house officer behavior Attends Veterinary Management Meetings in the relevant area Fills in for ADCS – SA when needed Attends Service Chiefs’ meetings regularly Oversight of house officer training and wellness programs with the Medical Director for House Officers, Program Coordinators, and Hospital Social Worker Aids the ADCS – SA with faculty wellness initiatives Assist in developing and implementing strategic initiatives/projects for the UFVH Assure compliance with federal/state veterinary practice regulations and college and University of Florida policies Serves on the Hospital Board and Hospital Management Council

  • Takes responsibility for and follows through on other projects as assigned Promotes a high-quality standard of veterinary care to patients Promotes excellent customer service to both clients and referring veterinarians Promote the philosophy, values, and mission of the university and the college Upholds the mission and values of the UFVH

Minimum Qualifications:

Essential Qualifications: DVM, VMD, or equivalent foreign veterinary degree plus at least six years of clinical experience and three years of leadership experience.

Desired Qualifications:  Experience managing veterinary hospital operations in an academic/private setting. Demonstrated leadership potential and ability to supervise professional employees effectively.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and customer satisfaction with all stakeholders, including administration, employees, clients, communities, regulatory agencies, and referring veterinarians Demonstrates oral and written communication skills that are clear and constructive Can participate as a team member fostering collaborative decision-making among committees, teams, or work groups of diverse composition Ability to develop and encourage effective working relationships between clinicians and staff Knowledge and understanding of the integrated professional, technical and administrative principles and procedures of clinical practice Ability to foster a cooperative work environment Ability to provide clinical guidance and leadership to professional personnel in their area of expertise Ability to provide faculty/house officers with meaningful and accurate feedback on their performance Ability to develop, plan and implement short-and long-range goals

The successful candidate will have an academic appointment as an Associate Professor or Professor (Clinical or Tenure Track as appropriate). The incumbent in this position will report to the department chair for their faculty assignment and the Associate Dean for Clinical Services – Small Animal (ADCS-SA) for the Assistant Dean assignment. The ADCS-SA will complete the annual evaluation on the performance of the administrative duties with input from the department chair on their faculty assignment. Rank and salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications and experience.
