Asst/Assoc/Full Professor of Small Animal Neurology/Neurosurgery

The Department of Clinical Sciences at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants to fill a full-time, 12-month appointment. This is the third faculty position in the Small Animal Neurology/Neurosurgery service and the successful applicant will join two ACVIM board-certified neurologists.  Depending on experience, qualifications, and interest, the successful candidate may be appointed to either a tenure-track (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) or a non-tenure-track (Clinical Assistant/Associate/Full Professor) position.

Responsibilities and opportunities:  The successful candidate will be expected to participate in teaching and clinical service in the Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital.  Teaching responsibilities include clinical and didactic instructional activities in professional veterinary medicine and postgraduate training programs (residency/graduate degrees) related to small animal neurology/neurosurgery.  Clinical service and research responsibilities are negotiable and will depend on the successful candidate’s interests and the type of appointment, i.e., clinical vs. tenure track.

Collaborations with individuals in other Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine departments include the Scott-Ritchey Research Center (https://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/research/scott-ritchey-research-center/) and the center for Detection Canine Science Innovation Technology and Education (https://www.vetmed.auburn.edu/dcsite/). The Department of Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology, the Department of Pathobiology, and the Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory are other possible avenues of research development and participation.

Faculty members in the Veterinary Teaching Hospitals include specialists in anesthesia, anatomic and clinical pathology, clinical pharmacology, emergency and critical care, dermatology, internal medicine, oncology, oncologic surgery, ophthalmology, radiation oncology, radiology, cardiology, and surgery. Faculty anatomic pathologists with neuropathology expertise are available for collaboration on research and clinical case management. Multiple researchers have active programs centered on neurodegenerative diseases, neuro-oncology, neuropharmacology, and genetic CNS diseases.

The Wilford & Kate Bailey Small Animal Teaching Hospital is one of the newest in the country.  It is fully equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and has a complement of eleven operating rooms. Onsite imaging equipment includes 2 Siemens wireless digital radiology systems, Siemens flat panel detector fluoroscopy, Toshiba Aplio 500 and Aplio 300 ultrasound machines, Siemens Skrya 3T MRI, GE VCT 64-slice scanner, and Enhanced Technologies digital gamma camera with a large rectangular detector.  All images are digital and are stored in a central PACS allowing image viewing throughout the hospital. Five board-certified radiologists are available to assist with diagnostic image acquisition and interpretation. Specialty equipment for the neurology/neurosurgery service includes an OPMI^® Pentero^® surgical operating microscope, Hall Air Drill, DePuy Synthes Electric Pen Drive system, a CUSA, support for intracranial surgery (craniotome and intra-operative ultrasonography), Cadwell^® electrodiagnostic equipment (EEG, EMG, BAER, and nerve conduction velocity capabilities), Brainsight^® neuronavigation VETG equipment, a Varian Edge stereotactic linear accelerator, and physical rehabilitation service (including an underwater treadmill and infinity pool).  Access is available to 3.0T and 7.0T magnets for research and clinical patients at the Auburn University MRI Research Center in the nearby AU Research Park.

Requirements/Qualifications:  Qualified applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree and must be Diplomates of ACVIM (Neurology) or ECVN with at least one year of post-residency experience at the time employment begins.  Collegiality, excellent communication skills, and ability to work as a part of a team are expectations.  For a tenure track position, successful candidates should have experience in research, and additional education such as a Ph.D. is desired but not required.  Starting salary will be commensurate with experience and credentials.  The candidate selected for this position must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States when the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Eligibility for faculty veterinary licensure in the State of Alabama is also required.
