University of Missouri Equine Ambulatory and Emergency Position

The Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery in the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri, invites applications for a full-time Equine Assistant Teaching Professor (non-tenure track) position in the Equine Section of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery.  Details about position, MU and Columbia are posted online at https://hr.missouri.edu/job-openings , Job # 45706

Primary clinical teaching and service responsibilities will be in support of the equine ambulatory and emergency services in the Veterinary Health Center.  Clinical and teaching efforts are anticipated to be 70-80% of total FTE (full time equivalent) for this position.  The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide clinical instruction and mentoring of professional veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students in clinical and didactic settings. 
  • Provide health care and service to equine ambulatory patients of the Veterinary Health Center
  • Provide after-hours in house and ambulatory emergency services Advise and consult with referring veterinarians and clients regarding emergency cases
  • Effectively communicate and work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies
  • Provide leadership and direction to interns, residents, and graduate students
  • Produce scholarly output that may include development of novel teaching/clinical tools, collaborative clinical research, and authorship of manuscripts, review articles or book chapters
  • Participate in committee assignments and curriculum development

This position is anticipated to include

-40 weeks including majority of ambulatory daytime and shared after-hours emergency and minority in-house after-hours emergency

-12 weeks off clinical duty

Final distribution of effort will be based on the successful candidate’s qualifications, career goals, and the needs of the Equine Section.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree (such as VMD, BVSc);

Candidates will be evaluated on:

  • Eligibility for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Missouri 
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain DEA and BNDD 
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain Federal Accreditation by the USDA  
  • Professional, residency and graduate training 
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a valid Driver’s license

Candidates will be assessed based upon educational and professional achievement.  Clinical experience, organizational skills, teaching proficiency, experience working effectively in diverse environments (including those within the industry including veterinarians, trainers, owners, and internal and external stakeholders), teaching experience, research experience, letters of reference and the potential to work within the framework of the VHC and equine section will all be considered in selection of a candidate.   We are seeking a candidate with an interest in high quality client focused veterinary medicine, a passion for teaching, excellent interpersonal skills, and a desire for continuing professional improvement.
