Looking for something different? How about continuing to see and manage some of the coolest cases but never having to communicate with clients? Balance. It is what we all are looking for, having the time to go to the beach with your dog or take your child to the park while still having a fulfilling and challenging career. This continues to be the holy grail for all of us but can be daunting while maintaining primary responsibility for hospitalized cases, on-call schedules, and demanding client emails/notifications. If I have your attention, please keep reading and reach out to see if we can make this position everything we could both dream of it to be.

My name is Dr. Jeff Davis, and I'm fortunate to own two AHAA general/urgent care practices in Summerville/Charleston, SC. Ever since venturing out as an owner nine years ago, I've set out to change the veterinary work-life balance and to find new ways to mentor and challenge general and urgent care veterinarians. For instance, we’ve converted all of our associates to 3-day work weeks (without sacrificing salary), Our next major goal is improved mentorship and continued quest for higher medical and surgical standards for our patients. Complacency is the enemy of progress.

We want to offer this balance to a boarded-certified small animal veterinary internist who yearns for gold-standard medicine and collegiate collaboration in a primary care environment. We are looking for an individual to go between our two primary care hospitals in Charleston, South Carolina. Responsibilities would include DVM to DVM consultations, abdominal +/- thoracic ultrasounds, CT, endoscopy, and colonoscopy procedures with a primary focus on secondary case management. Through your guidance and mentorship, our soon-to-be 13 veterinarians will provide all of the primary care and client education/discussions. In addition to clinical practice, our dream is to have biweekly one-on-one DVM Q&A sessions, monthly topic presentations, ACVIM board reviews and any other guidance to increase our medical and surgical standards. This position will be supported with state-of-the-art ultrasounds and scoping equipment that will be chosen with the input of the applicant. There would be no on-call responsibilities for emergency ultrasound or scoping procedures. With your guidance, other DVMs will be trained to scope as needed and based on individual interests and skill sets, and referral will always be an option.

Flowertown Animal Hospital and James Island Veterinary Hospital are modern equipped, AHAA general and urgent care facilities that service the greater Summerville and Charleston areas. Flowertown is currently a 7-doctor, soon-to-be 8-doctor, small animal and exotic practice set to undergo a renovation and expansion, going from 2,900sq ft to ~7,100sq ft in 2024-25. James Island Veterinary Hospital is currently a 4-doctor, soon-to-be 5-doctor small animal practice set to undergo renovation and a complete floorplan redesign of the 3,700 sq ft hospital in the Fall of 2024. Both locations offer dentistry, surgery, ultrasound, full in-house Idexx laboratories, digital radiology, isolation ward, mobile veterinary services (FAH), and urgent care services; open until 11pm at FAH and 10pm at JIVH. Both locations do not hospitalize patients overnight and offer direct transfers to one of three tertiary ER/specialty facilities (all within 30 minutes).

Our well-trained technical staff includes multiple certified veterinary technicians at each location. In the past year, we have implemented a licensed technician trainer position between both hospitals to further improve technician skill sets, efficiency, and knowledge bases. In addition, we offer a tuition assistance program at each hospital to further promote the formal education of our beloved technical staff. Our technicians and hospitals are further supported by three CVPM practice managers who are the cornerstones of our existence. Together, we have formed a unique culture of being dedicated to a collaborative and collegial environment that we hope forever pushes our medical and surgical standards.

The pay structure is a competitive base salary, starting at $200,000, plus a percentage (25%) of production over base production. Benefits include an annual CE stipend ($3,000), organization dues, licensure, PLIT, paid time off, matching Simple IRA (3%), and 75% of health insurance premium.  This position is also very dynamic: if you feel there are other ways to fill this role, we are always up for modifying the position to fit the needs of you and the hospital.
