Job Summary

Evolution Veterinary Specialists is seeking a full-time board-certified Veterinary Oncology Specialist to join our growing specialty and ICU/ER team in Lakewood, CO. Our practice has an excellent team of full-time, 24/7 Emergency doctors as well as Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Ophthalmology, Zoological Companion Animals (ZCA), Critical Care, and in-house Radiology support for all our departments. 

The Oncologist employs methods and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions presented in cats, dogs, large, and small animals. They work closely with owners to understand their pet’s symptoms, health concerns and provide appropriate diagnoses and treatments. The Oncologist is also responsible for the prescribing of medications, therapy, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness and further cancerous growth.

Required Licenses, Registrations, Certifications & Insurance by Colorado Law

  • Colorado Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) License.  Board Certification through ACVIM.  Registration with DORA.  AVMA PLIT Insurance.  DEA License. 

Specialist Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advanced Training & Education in the field of veterinary oncology and diagnostics  Provide expert care to patients with oncology cases, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of complex medical conditions. 
    • Cytology 
    • Minimally invasive aspirates and biopsies (i.e. ultrasound guided). 
    • Contrast radiography and fluoroscopy  
    • Ultrasound 
    • CT 
    • Bone marrow aspiration/biopsy. 
    • Various methods of Chemotherapy treatment. 
  • Regularly attend and participate in hospital rounds. 
  • Collaborate with other specialists and emergency doctors to deliver comprehensive care to all patients.  
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic and treatment options,  Participate in a collaborative team approach to provide the AAHA standard of veterinary care. 
  • Establish a strong oncology caseload and manage caseload appropriately. 
  • Keep careful medical records for all patients, treatments administered, exams, and procedures. 
  • Ensure treatment records are completed daily for all patients seen that day. 
  • Work with referring doctors to collaborate on care plans and follow-up with them regarding treatments administered. 
  • Attend mandatory meetings that include, but are not limited to: 
    • All Staff Meetings 
    • Specialty DVM Meetings 
    • Department Meetings
  • Promptly answer and return calls from referring doctors, clinics, and clients.  
  • Consistency in leading, managing, and coaching department technicians and technician assistants. 
  • Participate in department Team Building activities when available. 
  • Working knowledge of the following platforms: EzyVet, Instinct, IDEXX, Cubex. 
  • Attend and teach hospital CE opportunities for community and staff. 
    • Includes Lunch and Learns and attending marketing events to help bring new clientele to EVS and the Oncology department. 
  • Other duties as assigned; this list is not exhaustive, & employer reserves the right to assign additional tasks & responsibilities as needed. 

Skills & Other Requirements

  • Clear and consistent communication.  Time management and organization.  Confidence in working independently when needed and completing strict deadlines.  Open to collaboration with other department doctors, managers, supervisors, technicians/TAs, and administrative staff.  Capacity to put personal biases aside to be an active listener and support in brainstorming solutions.  Ready and willing to hold team members accountable as well as yourself.  Confidence in taking disciplinary actions and the follow through of those actions.  Prioritize safety and care in operating all equipment and handling all species of patients.  Strong emotional intelligence and de-escalation skills (client and staff).  Ability to explain treatment and charges/invoices to clients when necessary.  General understanding of AAHA standards and regulations.  Strong leadership skills congruent with EVS’s mission statement and core values.

Schedule Expectations:  

Specialty doctors are expected to work 4 x 10-hour shifts alongside their department medical team. Hours and days dependent on case load and overall needs of the hospital. Further schedule details will be discussed and outlined in the contract for employment agreement.
